Guido Reni

The Divine Master of the Italian Baroque Guido Reni was the preeminent figure of the Bolognese School and arguably the most influential Italian painter of the 17th century. Born in Bologna, he began his formal training under Denis Calvaert before joining the innovative Accademia degli Incamminati, led by the Carracci family. His move to Rome in the early 1600s exposed him to the grandeur of antiquity and the works of Raphael, which ignited his lifelong pursuit of a "divine" aesthetic—one that balanced Baroque drama with Classical grace.

At the height of his fame, Reni was often referred to as Il Divino (The Divine), a testament to the ethereal beauty and aristocratic elegance that defined his sacred subjects.
