Claudio Coello

The Last Great Master of the Spanish Golden Age Claudio Coello was the preeminent court painter to King Charles II and the final titan of the Spanish Golden Age. Born in Madrid to a family of Portuguese origin, he was a protégé of Francisco Rizi and later refined his craft through the royal collections, where he studied the masterpieces of Titian, Rubens, and Velázquez. His appointment as Pintor del Rey in 1683 and eventually Pintor de Cámara solidified his status as the leading artistic voice in the Spanish capital, tasked with maintaining the grandeur of the Habsburg court.

Throughout his illustrious career, Coello was celebrated for his ability to fuse the intense spiritual mysticism of Spain with the theatrical complexity of the high Baroque. His masterpiece, the Sagrada Forma in the Escorial, stands as a triumph of trompe l'oeil and portraiture, capturing the solemnity of the Spanish liturgy with breathtaking realism.
