Behold the Man

Ecce Homo by Antonio Ciseri (1871) is a masterpiece of perspective and silence.

Unlike traditional depictions, Ciseri places the viewer behind Pontius Pilate, looking out onto the agitated crowd below. We see the back of the Roman governor, draped in worldly power, gesturing to the suffering Christ beside him.
